To determine an answer for you, we need to look at certain contributing factors:
- How fast does your dogs hair grow?
- What length do you like?
- Do you brush your dog on a regular basis?
- What lifestyle does your dog have? (Is he an inside or outside dog? Do you go swimming, running a round a lot and therefore getting dirty easier?)
- How old is your dog?
How fast does your dogs hair grow?
This comes down to your breed. For example Poodles have hair that grows exceptionally fast whilst other breeds like Maltese or wire haired breeds don’t seem to grow as fast. Spaniels seem to grow faster in certain parts of their bodies like feet and ears than say their bodies. So the first factor is, what breed is your dog? Or, if you have a mixed breed dog, what is the dominant breed of your dog? Poodles and poodle mixes usually need grooming every 6 weeks whilst some of the slower growing breeds, like maltese, can last out even 8 – 10 weeks. And spaniels might need their feet and ears taken care of more often than the body.
What length do you like to see your dogs coat?
This comes down to you and what you like. Every dog owner is different. If you like your dog’s hair short for easy maintenance, you’ll need to book a groom every 6 – 8 weeks. Or if you like to keep your dog’s coat in tip top condition, you need to reduce the time to around 4 -6 weeks.
Do you brush your dog often enough?
The longer the hair, the easier it will knot up and eventually matt. Brushing your dog on a regular basis is important not just for their looks but health as well. Once hair starts to matt it is very difficult and time consuming, not to mention uncomfortable for the dog to remove.
What lifestyle does your dog have?
If your dog is an active down the beach, charging around the dog park sort of dog then care of his coat is imperative. If your dog is a couch potato, avoids puddles and mud at all costs then again it comes down to his length of coat and home grooming routine. The less you do at home, the more often he will need to visit the groomers.
How old is your dog?
This may seem like a strange question but is quite important for your dog’s socialisation. Puppies need to be introduced to grooming slowly from early on, so they can build confidence in the grooming process. Even if you don’t have a breed that needs regular grooming, every dog needs to be washed and nails trimmed. The more exposure a pup has to a kind caring groomer from an early age, the better the association and the more pleasurable grooming experiences they’ll have later on.
