As the temperature outside drops, us people begin wearing warmer winter coats. But how do dogs prepare for cold weather? Dogs rely on their owners to provide shelter, food, water, and warm blankets and jumpers during the colder winter months. Here is advise from our groomer at dog grooming Alexandria.
Some breeds handle the cold weather better than others. Breeds such as Huskies, Malamutes and Finnish Lapphund are bred to handle cold weather. Others like Chihuahuas or Italian Greyhounds are not. Dog owners should keep an eye out for shivering, because it is a sign of your dog being cold.
Dog’s coat is designed to keep them cool in summertime and warm in winter. But it only works if the dog’s fur is in good condition. Matted hair doesn’t work keeping the dog warm the same way it would otherwise. So an important aspect of preparing your dog for winter is keeping their hair knot and matt free. Without forgetting to keep the hair longer for winter!
Dogs with underlying health conditions may be less adapted to changes in weather. Check your dog’s skin as well, to make sure they don’t have any bald spots or skin infections that might also affect their winter coat.
