The speed of the wagging tail indicates how excited a dog is. Meanwhile, the way the tail sweeps reveals whether the dog’s emotional state is positive or negative. Wide sweeps and narrow ones mean a different thing!
Here are some different combinations:
- Greetings: A slight wag, with each swing of only small breadth.
- Relaxed: A broad wag is a friendly wag.
- Insecurity: A slow wag with the tail at half-mast is less social than most other tail signals. Slow wags are usually signs of insecurity.
- Alert: Tiny, high-speed movements are signs a dog is aroused and about to do something.
Every time your dog moves his tail, it acts like a fan, spreading the dog’s unique scent around.
These smells, called pheromones, are designed to communicate information between animals. Some important pheromones come from the anal glands. This odour is unique. When dogs wag their tails, they release some of the scent.
