Dogs are social pack animals who need interaction with other dogs.
True, but not all dogs have been socialised in a right way or even like other dogs. Some dogs might be afraid of other dogs and react in an aggressive manner. And some dogs are simply dog aggressive, for what ever reasons. And being on lead is a completely different thing as being off lead. Some dogs are fine with other dogs approaching them off lead but feel threatened on lead. That’s why you should never let your dog walk up to on lead dogs without checking with their owner first. Especially, if the owner has more than one dog. Why? Because those dogs might see themselves as a pack that is threatened by a strange dog and in worst case you’ll have a dog fight in your hands.
All of our day care dogs are social and friendly dogs. And we never walk reactive dogs with other dogs or without training. So we can handle dogs running up to us. But from a trainer point of view and as an ex reactive dog owner I see this as an issue.
I never let my dog run up to on lead dogs because I understand the possible trauma it might cause. I also understand how it might affect a training that dog might be going through.
So let’s be considered and polite and teach our dog reliable recall and good manners when there are on lead dogs around. After all, everyone should be allowed to enjoy the beautiful parks Sydney has to offer!
P.S. If you need help with your recall or anything else, we also offer training!
