Balance, communication, pheromone distribution… your dog’s tail does it all!

The dog’s tail assists in balance. For example, keeping running dogs on course when they turn. Dogs also use their tails for balance when walking. However, the tail is not particularly important when simply standing around on flat surfaces.

Dogs tail also serves as a signal that communicates information about the dog’s emotional state.

Variables such as how high or low the dog carries his tail and how quickly the dog is moving it, can convey a lot of information about how the dog is feeling. And a tail can even reveal his intentions. That’s why dogs with very short tails can have difficulties interacting with other dogs.

The tail’s position can indicate a dog’s mood.

A middle height usually suggests the dog is relaxed. However, if the tail is held horizontally, the dog is alert. As the tail position moves farther up, it is a sign the dog is becoming more threatening. A vertical tail is a clear dominant signal.

The lower the tail, the more concerned a dog is. Therefore, a low tail is a sign of a submissive dog, worried dog, or dog that feels poorly. The extreme expression of fear is a tail tucked under the body, between the legs.

Different breeds carry their tails at different heights.

All positions should be read relative to the average position where the individual dog normally holds its tail.
